This is Only the Beginning
rexfest:
I first met Rex Savin during my summer job at the Family Vacation Center at UCSB. Little did I know that the relationship I would build with him and his family would lead me to this point. This is the official blog of the RexFest foundation and it will be used to raise awareness for down syndrome and the RexFest Music Festival that will be taking place in the Summer of 2011.

Classic Coffee House
I do remember a time when an eclectic coffee house was the only place I wanted to be. When they were as original as their offerings. I found such a place today in Santa Barbara. Located in Isla Vista, is a place where organic coffee, succulents, and cups made from plants rule. I give you, Caje.

What's in your eco closet?
The master closet in my eco home is pathetic in its struggle for organization. I struggled with this problem of organizing my closet because finding an eco conscious closet company was non-existent to me. Even though I was in desperate need of organization, I didn’t want to compromise indoor air quality by using a traditional closet organizer. About three weeks ago, I found her, and yes I...

Can you be in love with an organic Euro Sham?
The answer is, yes, yes you can!! If you check out www.ploverorganic.com you will see what I am talking about. This blue sham made my day. I started envisioning many of these Blue Geo/Blue Dot pillows tossed throughout the Savin Family Eco Home.
I recently discovered Plover organics and was intrigued by the unique low impact dyes and design. ...

I just can't help myself, Chartreuse must be my...
I just can’t help myself! Eco Furnishings consume my mind and I love to hunt them down. I went to one of my favorite furniture stores this weekend, Chartreuse, in Los Alamitos, CA. I was on the hunt for beautiful eco pieces and found them as soon as I walked in the door. The Eco sofas by Lee Industries were not only beautiful but made my heart sing. Lee Industries boasts having the...

Biokleen's BAC-OUT Bathroom cleaner
I’ve had a relationship with Biokleen since the beginning of my company Until Kara. When customers would call and ask which detergent to use on my organic crib linens, I would usually suggest the Biokleen Oxygen Bleach Plus, a chlorine free product. Being a fan of Biokleen, I was offered the opportunity to try something new to review. James Mannion from the Marketing department sent me a...

Reducing Energy Consumption
Such a Simple fix to energy consumption, LED lights.
By replacing six traditional recessed lights with these Cree
LED lights, my Eco living room is running on 63 watts.
A typical recessed living room uses 360-540 watts of electricity.
This change will save you money, landfill space, and reduce
your carbon footprint. Not bad for a Monday.

The Perception of Green
To say that I am currently obsessed with green home furnishings is an understatement. Today, I visited Cate Baird in her Mixed Greens store at THE OC MART Mix in Costa Mesa, CA.
I was happy to learn about her take on peoples’ different perceptions of Green. Is it just organic? Is it repurposed? Or is it up cycled? Well at Mixed Greens it can be all of the above.
Cate has blended vintage with...

Why I don't like Mondays......
Oh, how I detest my neighbor’s gardener!! (not shown)
It must be Monday. It is time for the mow, blow, and go around here. It ‘s that time of the week when toxic fumes consume my home. It is simply the day when my neighbor’s gardener is here to make our street into a not so better place. The EPA states “gas mowers may account for five percent of U.S. air pollution”, and I believe it. You can...

On a Mission for reclaimed wood
Took a drive down the coast today. I was on a mission. A mission to find reclaimed wood, particularly a sofa/multipurpose table. There are many projects in the Eco Savin home that need attention. These photos are my finds from Bliss Linens in Corona Del Mar, CA. The colors, the beauty of sea glass, the wood, all unbelievable. It is so exciting to see raw material made into something new....
